Advanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy Experiential Workshop

WORKSHOP DATE: November 8 – 10, 2010

The Advanced Workshop is designed for professionals who have already received training in Cognitive Therapy (CT/CBT) and seek to enhance their ability to deliver CT efficiently and effectively to clients who pose a challenge in treatment. Participants are encouraged to bring notes and DVDs so they can present complex or difficult cases. As a group, we will conceptualize clients, specify problems, determine whether practical and/or psychological interventions are indicated, then discuss how to use the conceptualization to plan treatment within and across sessions. Techniques will be demonstrated and then practiced through supervised roleplay. DVDs by master clinicians will be shown and discussed. Dr. Aaron Beck will conduct a live therapy session and discuss the case with participants.

Through these case presentations and DVDs, we will discuss how to:

  • enhance the therapeutic relationship (clients’ reactions to therapists and vice versa)
  • conceptualize complex cases
  • determine key cognitions and behaviors in a range of disorders
  • engage reluctant or resistant clients
  • address therapy-interfering behaviors
  • reduce self-harming behaviors
  • socialize clients to treatment (including improving homework adherence)
  • decrease hopelessness
  • modify core beliefs
  • manage difficult termination issues.
